Carl Hentsch
"My Life in Quilts"

Take a journey with me from the beginning of my quilting carrier to the present. Learn more about me, 3 Dog Design and how I got my start in quilting. I show many quilts that I have made, including my original designs from by books Stars 'N' Strips Forever, Amish-Inspired Quilts for Today’s Home and New York Beauties and Flying Geese, as well as quilts completed for various magazines and fabric manufactures. See and hear how my quilting aesthetic has changed through the years “making the modern traditional and the traditional modern.”

Workshop January 15 2022
9am via Zoom
"Crazy Tula"

Want to learn how to make those aptly named New York Beauties created by Carl Hentsch? While they might seem daunting, Carl will break it down for us in a day-long workshop, teaching us step by step how to do it. Along the way you'll learn foundation piecing and curved seams and make up to 3 New York Beauty blocks of your own -- enough to give you a good start on a quilt of your own or make into pillows or... the back of a jacket, maybe? The front of a great tote bag?

Come join in as Carl leads the way, with you using your own choice of fabrics, to a beautiful block or three to start out 2022 with a colorful bang!

The book New York Beauties and Flying Geese will be required for fabric requirements and cutting instructions.

Ranell Hansen
"Scout Tee Project"

Make Your Own Scout Tee!

Ranell will guide us through the essentials of creating the basic Scout Tee, using Grainline Studio’s pattern, available online or at Roxanne's in a whole range of sizes. She will demonstrate how to fit the pattern to individual measurements, which ensures a good fit - what we all strive for.

This popular top is patterned for use with regular cotton fabrics, but as we have seen in various examples, you can use knits, guys‘ shirts, old t-shirts and more to remake them as a Scout Tee. It’s all fun and pretty easy, even for those who consider themselves inexperienced.

Intermediates and newbies alike will be introduced to fun variations to the Tee in Part 2, which will be held one week later. Part 2 will also include show and tell of your finished shirts.

Don't miss this opportunity to cut loose from the norm and try something new.

Required for class:
Grainline Studio Scout Tee pattern (0-18 or 14-30/32)
Fabric to complete the tee plus normal sewing supplies

Available online at Grainline Studio
Available at Roxannes in Carpinteria - (805) 566-1250

Kitty Wilkin
"Take Great Quilt Photos Now!"

You’ve spent countless hours planning, cutting, sewing, trimming, basting, quilting, and binding your quilt, now how do you document your masterpiece!?

Whether you have a point and shoot, a fancy DSLR but simply don't know how to use it, or even a smartphone, Kitty will teach you how to make the most of the tools you have to get great quilt photos for your blog and Instagram.

Kitty will discuss photography basics, lighting, composition, and staging, and will share a few inexpensive tools that you can find around your house to take your photos from good to great!

You will leave feeling confident that you, too, can take great quilt photos without buying any fancy equipment.

Workshop March 12 2022
9am-12noon - via Zoom
"Quilt Your Life: Milestone Quilts For Every Moment"

Come explore the world of quilts created to mark milestones, and see why these quilts are a fun and meaningful solution to joyful sewing in this busy world. In this workshop, Kitty will share her journey through the world of creating milestone quilts, beginning with the quilt she created for her third child to mark his first year of life, and will explore other life events that can be documented through the creation of a quilt.

Together we will talk about the many variables to consider when designing milestone quilts and you will come up with a plan for a milestone quilt of your own. Kitty will guide you through the process so that you leave feeling inspired and ready to dive into creating a positive feedback loop in your life, documenting your days through the creation of a quilt.

(Note that this is a planning workshop, and no sewing will take place during it.

Because each person's plan for their Quilt Your Life project will be as unique as the person themselves, there's not really a standard workshop project photo. I've included a few examples of filled out planning pages and example projects as a peek at what folks might have planned by the end of the workshop.

Supply List

Upon registration you will receive Kitty's Quilt Your Life Planning PDFs. These should be printed and brought to the workshop.

Yvonne Fuchs
"Transparency Fabric Selection: Tips and Tricks"

Transparency quilts are a favorite design technique, and I talk about what inspires me to design using the technique and how to approach fabric selection when you are working with or wanting to make a transparency quilt. The talk includes tips and tricks on how to use common technology to your benefit when shopping online or in person. Even if you aren't planning to make a transparency quilt, the fabric selection tips & tricks are geared to make you more confident in your next fabric pull!

Have the following on hand to evaluate the tips and techniques Yvonne presents to make sure you get your questions answered:
1. Cell phone / tablet (any mobile device that can take and edit photos)
2. A grouping of fabrics (prints and solids welcome!) in one colorway
3. A light source (the lecture will be in the evening, so let's learn to work with the tools you have on hand)

Workshop May 14 and 21
11am - 2pm PDT - Zoom
"Transparency Quilt Workshop"

Learn how to evaluate fabric choices for transparency overlay and about how the visual relationship between different colors, print sizes, and tones can be balanced in your quilts by working through the Wayward Transparency pattern. Wayward Transparency requires 2-3 fabrics in gradation. Traditional piecing techniques will be explored, with additional insights into precision piecing and how to work with directional fabrics.

The workshop will be divided into two Saturdays, one week apart, to allow for participants to work on their quilts during the week:
The first part will be Saturday, May 14, from 11 a.m.-2 p.m.
The second part will be Saturday, May 21, from 11 a.m.-2 p.m.

Yvonne's quilts have won awards at QuiltCon, PIQF, and elsewhere. You can see more about her online at quiltingjetgirl.com or on Instagram, where she is @quiltingjetgirl.
